Hired dream wedding photographer, check! Scheduled engagement session, check! Figured out what to wear to your engagement session, all of a sudden you start to stress. Don’t worry, you’re not alone! In fact, ‘What do we wear to our engagement session?’ has quickly become the most common questions my brides ask once they’ve booked us. While Kimberly Photography couples receive a full on Engagement Style Guide to help them prepare for their sessions, I wanted to share a few tips with you today!
Before we dive into our top 3 style tips for you both, I want to go on a deeper level for a quick second. Over the past 15 years of shooting engagement sessions, I’ve seen styles come and go…then come and go again. I would advise that you shouldn’t get too caught up on what’s trending or what is super cute on the mannequin and put more of your focus into how your wardrobe looks on you. Having the right fit, silhouette and color palette, can boost your confidence, which always helps you to look and feel your best in front of any camera. Never forget, 50% of your photo is style, but the other 50% is the emotional connection you have to the image.
Dress it up!
If you’ve ever wanted to go all out wearing a sequined gown or a tulle skirt for example, now is the time to rock it! Don’t have one? Check with your girlfriends, you might be surprised at what you can borrow! There are also some pretty awesome selections on Rent the Runway too if you don’t want to add a fancy piece to your wardrobe.
Flatter your feature!
Over the years I’ve witnessed many brides feel insecure about their body, no matter what shape or size they are. Working with flattering silhouettes and colors that compliment your hair and skin is an easy way to feel good about how you look for your shoot! Also, try things on before the session! You won’t get as much out of your great silhouette and complimentary if your clothes don’t fit properly!
Take away one less stress of getting ready before your shoot and get some lash extensions, or a blow out, or even better, work with a professional hair and make up artist to pamper yourself. Confidence plays a huge role in a successful photo session and is always the best accessory.
Coordinate Your Look
As you’re coordinating your outfit with your fiance, keep in mind that your outfits will look the most cohesive on camera when the color palettes coordinate, but don’t necessarily “match.”Most of my brides choose their dress first, and then put together his outfit based on that.
How To Go Casual
Dressing up is certainly not a requirement and dressing casual can make for great photos too! It’s important to wear clothes that reflect your own style and personality. The key is to ensure that what ever style outfit you select, that it fits properly and is flattering to your body type.
Talk with your man days, even weeks leading up to your session and clue him in on how you envision your session going. Show him your photographers blog showcasing engagement sessions.
Now that you’ve curated your style for your engagement session, take the night one step further and make plans to go out! It will give you something to look forward to at the end of your session, plus it’s a super way to celebrate checking off “Have Engagement Session” your wedding to-do list!
